Big-D/Driscoll Project: Construction of Philly's Mormon Temple without Caffeine, Smoking, Swearing

It&#8217;s been two years since ground was broken in Center City on a massive Mormon temple and visitors&#8217; center, and it might just be one of the more remarkable construction sites in recent city history. Let&#8217;s just say the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints (LDS) goes by its own rules — not those typically found in local union handbooks. And it makes sure those rules are enforced.
No smoking. No coffee. No swearing.
Praying optional — but encouraged.
To the union workers toiling away on-site, the 60,000 square foot project is vastly different from any they&#8217;ve undertaken before. 
At the time of the ground-breaking, Mayor Michael Nutter hailed the project at 18th and Vine Streets for its projected infusion of millions of dollars into the local economy, as well as the 300 construction jobs it would create.
Church officials contend the worship site is much-needed to serve the Philadelphia area&#8217;s estimated 35,000 parishioners. The closest area temples are in Manhattan and just outside of Washington, D.C. &#8220;That, while seemingly in distance isn&#8217;t very far in time to get there, in commitment and so forth, it becomes a struggle for families,&#8221; said Elder Robert Smith, the highest-ranking church official in northeastern North America. &#8220;So Philadelphia was chosen as a natural place to have us build a temple, and we are excited about it.&#8221; 
He said after the temple plans were announced in 2008, it took church officials between six and eight months to find the right property to build on. They then went forward with the purchase and planning of the project.
&#8220;We have found that the city council, the planning department, the Logan Square Association and the surrounding neighbors have all been very supportive about it,&#8221; Smith said, noting Nutter has also been a strong champion. &#8220;It&#8217;s been a great experience, and I think everyone feels like the addition of this building in the city will add to the value of the city in terms of beauty and architecture, and will be a beautiful piece of land when it&#8217;s finally finished.&#8221;
Though Philadelphia has plenty of experience handling large construction projects, when it comes to building sacred spaces, local building officials must bow to church leadership headquartered in Salt Lake City. The international LDS temple department is responsible for both commissioning and funding the project, as well as drawing up contractor agreements that contain some unusual requirements.
&#8220;There&#8217;s no smoking or coffee drinking, and, obviously, no booze or anything like that on the site, at all,&#8221; said Pat Gillespie, business representative for the Philadelphia Building Trades Council. Workers must go to a break area across the street if they want a fix of caffeine or nicotine. &#8220;The reason is because it&#8217;s holy ground,&#8221; said Steffanie Anderson, assistant regional director of LDS public affairs. &#8220;We dedicated it a couple years ago.&#8221;
Smith said the church considers the rising temple &#8220;a sacred edifice&#8221; being built on a site consecrated for its use. &#8220;We had a ground-breaking and a special prayer that made that happen, and we believe that we need to treat it with the same respect we would with one of our churches,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And so we&#8217;ve asked our contractors to follow similar things as we expect on all of our private property.&#8221; 
The temple&#8217;s building contracts also give hiring preference to union-affiliated Mormon workers in the Philadelphia region. But none could be found, aside from one carpenter who may join the team when his skills are needed during the project&#8217;s later stages. 
As is custom for LDS temple construction, each meeting with foremen and project managers at the Philadelphia site begins with a review of the day&#8217;s assignments and prayer — all under the watchful eyes of specially-appointed temple minders, who are always on-site to keep vigil over the proceedings.
&#8220;They&#8217;re very precise and attentive to the process,&#8221; Gillespie said, though he asserted any kind of prayer sessions are purely optional. 
Brother and Sister Carr&#8217;s &#8216;cookies!&#8217; Alex and Pamela Carr moved from Utah and will remain in Philadelphia until the temple&#8217;s construction is complete. Alex, with his plaid shirt and rolled-up sleeves, shock of white hair and piercing blue eyes, draws more than a passing resemblance to Paul Newman. When speaking, he easily lapses into folksy sermons, moving from pleasantries to parables and back again. He can rattle off at length endless facts about the tenets and customs of his faith — and bake a mean cookie. &#8220;Every Wednesday, he and his wife bake 100 cookies — homemade cookies — and they deliver them to the construction workers,&#8221; said Corinne Dougherty, LDS director of public affairs for the Philadelphia region. &#8220;The construction workers say, &#8216;It&#8217;s cookie Wednesday! It&#8217;s cookie Wednesday!&#8217; They love it.&#8221;
Located in the site&#8217;s parking lot, the visitor&#8217;s center is appointed with large poster boards depicting renderings of the temple and stacks of leaflets and literature about the LDS faith. Visitors are encouraged to take a pamphlet, a handful of candy from several glass bowls or a chunk of rock. Yes, rock. That&#8217;s another symbolic aspect of the construction. When workers dug about halfway down into the 30-foot pit that will serve as the temple&#8217;s underground parking garage, they hit granite. Many people would see the development as a setback — it took about six months to chip through — but Alex Carr saw it as a teaching moment. It brought to his mind a scripture passage in which Christ said a wise man builds his house on rock so it&#8217;s not toppled by winds and rains.
Each day the granite was exposed, Carr climbed down into the pit and returned with bucketfuls of rocks. He began giving them away to visiting youth groups and missionaries as a visual reminder of the importance of building one&#8217;s life on firm footing — the rock, of course, serving as an analogy for faith. He&#8217;s amassed an estimated 2,000 pieces of granite but expects he&#8217;ll soon run out: demand has been high. 
Soon, Carr plans to hold weekly Monday morning &#8220;job prayers&#8221; over the site, its workers and building materials. Though all of the project&#8217;s 100 workers are invited, attendance will be optional. He&#8217;s not sure anyone will show up, but he feels the temple&#8217;s construction is just as special as the worship services that will eventually take place inside the finished temple.
&#8216;Cleanest construction site he&#8217;s ever seen&#8217; 
Smith pointed to the ritualistic regulations as evidence of the Mormons&#8217; precision and pride, tenets he indicated have spread to the lay workers on site.
&#8220;In a recent meeting with Mayor Nutter, he made the comment that we have the cleanest construction site he&#8217;s ever seen in the city,&#8221; Smith said. &#8220;We sweep the sidewalks and the roadways. The fencing is beautiful. It doesn&#8217;t have graffiti on it, and it&#8217;s reflective of the effort that the workers are putting into it. The workers have a certain pride about the project, so they feel it&#8217;s special as well. The experience we&#8217;ve had is that they feel a special spirit about the property and about the construction.&#8221;
He said the church is using top-notch building materials and enforcing safety rules and site inspections &#8220;to the highest standards.&#8221; For example, church officials looked at thousands of types of granite for the temple&#8217;s edifice before settling on one sourced from an island off the coast of Maine and shipped down from Quebec.
&#8220;We spend a lot of money per square foot to make that happen, and it&#8217;s worth it because we&#8217;ll have a building that will be in the city for not just decades but, we hope, centuries,&#8221; Smith said. He acknowledged the meticulous standards are likely to push the project&#8217;s budget over its initial $70 million estimate, though he was unable to say by how much. &#8220;We&#8217;re going to do our best to control the costs, but not at the expense of cheapening the project.&#8221; Construction is &#8220;right on schedule&#8221; for a 2016 completion, according to Anderson.
In August, the majority of concrete was poured for the substructure and two levels of underground parking are nearing completion. Workers are hoping to begin steel work in January on the temple, which will rise four stories above ground, or about 75 feet above the sidewalk. The exterior walls are slated to begin to rise next summer.
&#8220;It will be four stories of meeting rooms and worship centers &#8230; not a big, cavernous cathedral-type building, as maybe the outside presence would lead you to believe,&#8221; Smith said. &#8220;It will be a beautiful structure once it&#8217;s done.&#8221; The building&#8217;s tallest of two spires &#8211; the east spire &#8211; has been meticulously measured so to be level with the tops of the adjacent Free Library of Philadelphia and family court buildings. The spire will be topped by a statue of the angel Moroni. The inside of the temple will have a Colonial feel riffing off Independence Hall, with rugs instead of carpeting and wood that&#8217;s painted &#8211; never stained.
Despite some of the more unusual requirements the project entails, Gillespie said he&#8217;s not aware any of the practices are deterring workers from signing on. &#8220;I don&#8217;t want to make it seem like it&#8217;s a peculiar job,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a job with some unique requirements, but we&#8217;re happy to accommodate. The construction workers are versatile and they can adapt. This is what the customer wants, it&#8217;s a sound request and they&#8217;re paying the bill. It&#8217;s going to be a beautiful, beautiful building. This is phenomenal for the city.&#8221;

The 90,000 sq. ft. Juniper Building will serve as the anchor to all of the ongoing efforts, especially as new buildings emerge and new students join in the excitement at the Herriman Campus.

The field of dreams in question turned into the Juniper Building, while &#8220;they&#8221; are the 1,000 students coming and going to classes this semester. Those students doubled the expected enrollment in year one at the Herriman Campus—the ongoing joint venture between Salt Lake Community College and the University of Utah to provide Utah’s South Valley students easier access to education and a seamless transition between the college’s two-year and university’s four-year programs.
Modern tech features in the many class and breakout rooms will advance remote and e-learning opportunities—all to promote each school’s desire to bring a higher education opportunities to potential students across the state. From functions like those, to form, where copper-colored terracotta panels and rammed earth walls tie the building design from ajc architects perfectly to place, with the copper mine and Oquirrh foothills visible just west of the site’s first structure.

Back when the existing City Hall finished in 1980, 100 full-time employees served a population of just over 13,000 residents. How the city has grown since then! Today, well over 1,000 full- and part-time employees serve the 100,000-plus residents that call St. George home.
The building looks back to the past, namely its address at 61 Main Street giving a historical nod to when pioneers settled the area in 1861. But most importantly, the building looks forward to helping meet the current and future needs of St. George. When construction finishes in early 2025, employees and residents will be able to enjoy the 69,500-sq. ft. City Hall and the neighboring four-story parking garage in the heart of the city.
As the current City Hall has served admirably for over 40 years, Mayor Michelle Randall hinted at how she hoped future residents would see the new building. &#8220;In another 50 or 60 years, I hope our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will say ‘This City Hall served us well.’”

Teamwork makes the dream work, especially when getting 37,000 pounds of pipe systems from floor to ceiling.

Out in Burley, Idaho, Big-D National Food &amp; Beverage’s Project Suntado has involved the highest levels of coordination work—prefabrication, transportation, assembly—to prepare the project for the “Burley Big Boost,” when 35 team members lifted a 37,000-pound pipe rack assembly via 23 brand new chain hoists. The process of raising the rack and piping from the ground to the 40-foot-high final place took approximately six hours.
Old-fashioned muscle was a unique way the team put safety first as they met the demands of the project schedule. By working off the slab instead of 40 feet up in the air, minimizing labor hours, and focusing on quality control assurance, the lift was a success—and earned high praise from Suntado LLC Co-Owner Dirk Reitsma as he and his company look to provide consumers with shelf-stable milk, or milk that requires no refrigeration.
“It was incredible to watch the effort and ingenuity of Big-D and RM Mechanical, Inc to accomplish this part of the project for Suntado.&#8221;

Safety tape and a knife would be just fine for the hundred or so that turned out to celebrate the opening of Alpine Academy Middle School in Chubbuck, Idaho.

Over 35,000 square feet of classrooms, flexible learning areas, and more are ready for the 6th through 8th graders, teachers, and staff. A learning stair, copious daylighting, and activity-specific spaces and materials are great features, but school administrator Joel Lovstadt said it best: “This is a safe learning environment where students and staff can thrive.”
He was gracious in thanking not just Big-D Construction, but every one of the dozens of subcontractors who played a pivotal role in hustling to get the school delivered two weeks ahead of schedule and ready to accept students in the building today. The safety tape and knife at the ribbon cutting acting as another example of the team’s preparedness and willingness to pitch in wherever required.
Thanks to the team’s hard work, Lovstadt said, “We’re welcoming not just the new building, but new families, and new students on this welcoming day.”

Students in BYU-Idaho’s construction management and VDC programs toured the Cottonwood Highland Apartments job site with BYU-Idaho alum.

Students in BYU-Idaho’s construction management and VDC programs toured the Cottonwood Highland Apartments job site with BYU-Idaho alum and Big-D Superintendent Scott Harris last week. Scott showed how the intricate puzzle of commercial construction is the perfect place for students to utilize their education, specifically for the role of superintendent.
His advice for students: “If you don’t know, ask. It shows you are willing to listen to the people who do this every day.”
Scott said that mutual trust built from asking questions is essential in the field, especially, Scott said, since good superintendents are needed now more than ever to build collaborative and successful teams.
“Being a superintendent isn’t just about what you know,” he said, “but about the relationships you build and trusting the subcontractors to be accountable to the project.”

Congratulations to our teammates at MVE + Partners for their big wins at the Pacific Coast Builders’ Conference 60th annual Gold Nugget Awards.

MVE + Partners won &#8220;Best On-the-Boards Multi-Family Community&#8221; for their work on Post District Residences in Salt Lake City, Utah. As a mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly development in Salt Lake City&#8217;s downtown, Post District will be a community comprised of five buildings with 580 residential units, 22,405 sq ft of retail, and 86,000 sq ft of private and public outdoor space when Big-D Construction and team members finish construction later this year.

Big-D had the opportunity to attend and receive multiple awards at the Associated Builders and Contractors Utah chapter's 2022 Excellence in Construction event on May 23rd in Salt Lake City, Utah.

With the association being the voice of the merit shop philosophy in construction, we were honored to receive their recognition as the Contractor of the Year along with the STEP Gold Level safety award. We were also awarded for our work on these stellar projects:

May is Mental Health Month, and we value the importance of maintaining a healthy headspace.

At Big-D, we organize wellness checks for our associates to check in on their health and assess where they are at physically, mentally, and emotionally&#8211;and #lookwithin is a great starting point.
The initiative comes from Mental Health America and allows everyone to get a better understanding of where their mental health is at and how to make it better.

Builders’ Day is this week on Wednesday, April 12th!

Big-D Construction was thrilled to be part of the one-of-a-kind customized Project Pink, which is a newly remodeled Raising Cane’s.

It was designed personally by Post Malone, who also made a special appearance alongside Todd Graves (Founder of Raising Cane&#8217;s) for the ribbon cutting of the revamped restaurant on April 13th.

Big-D Construction is actively involved with opportunities to engage with and support the community.

The University of Utah&#8217;s College of Architecture and Planning runs a program for architecture students ( @designbuildbluff )to design and construct buildings for indigenous families in Bluff, UT.
Big-D Construction was able to donate a very specific truck to transport materials to build homes for the Rural and Native communities of San Juan County in the Utah Four Corners.

March 8th is International Women’s Day!

Big-D Companies would like to give a BIG thank you to all of our incredible women associates that work within our family of companies.

We had two associates from Big-D Construction participate in the State Capitol Day by advocating for specific bills that have an impact on mental health and suicide prevention.

They stood by our partners at AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) and NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), as well as LiveOn and SafeUT.
They also spoke with Senator Thatcher, who was instrumental in passing legislation for the suicide crisis line (SB 175).
One of our participating associates shared, &#8220;Suicide plagues the construction industry, so it is important that we get involved and have our voices heard. We showed up in our Big-D vests, but we were representing the construction industry as a whole.&#8221;
&#8220;No matter what drives you, we encourage everyone to take action and get involved!&#8221;

Big-D Companies strives to be engaged within communities. Part of who we are and how we do business is giving back and today we had the opportunity to present a check with @agcutah to the Utah Food Bank.

Our COO at Big-D Companies, Troy Thompson, recently served as a Chairman on the AGC of Utah Board. He wanted the AGC to consider donating to the @utahfoodbank organization.
Today the Utah Foodbank was presented a spectacular donation. The check was written for nearly $36,000, which will provide about 161,000 meals.
We are grateful for the opportunity that we have to interact and donate to great causes within our communities.

Construction is officially underway for 5 South Commerce Center, a new industrial warehouse located just off I-80 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Big-D Construction’s scope of work for the 173,033 square-foot concrete tilt-up facility includes the building core and shell, and all associated site improvements for the 11-acre site.
The project is estimated to be completed by late summer 2023.

Celebrating the completion of another project at Weber State University! 

Friday, a ribbon cutting and tour of the Noorda Engineering, Applied Science &amp; Technology Building took place at the Ogden Campus. Among the guests were Speaker Brad Wilson, House of Representatives, President Brad Mortensen, Weber State University, and Rob Moore, Big-D Executive Chairman.
The state-of-the-art facility is over 130,000 square feet, with 15 engineering labs, 14 classrooms, and nine computer labs.

Salt Lake City, UT (October 5, 2022) – Big-D Construction, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, announced today it has acquired CFC Construction. Based in Golden, Colorado, CFC Construction has served the state for 45 years. Under new ownership, the company will continue to be locally managed and operate under the same name. Big-D Companies Joins Forces with Colorado Based CFC Construction

The doors are officially opened at Westminster College's Florence J. Gillmor Hall!

Big-D Salt Lake group recently took part in the grand opening celebration of a two-year expansion project.
At 26,000 square feet, the academic facility allows Westminster to better serve its performing and visual arts students through state-of-the-art classrooms, rehearsal, performance, and display spaces. The building includes a 93-seat recital hall, a costume studio, an expanded scene shop, and a grand lobby for art shows and receptions.

The doors are officially opened at Westminster College’s Florence J. Gillmor Hall!

In partnership with the Associated Builders and Contractors, Utah Chapter, Big-D Construction spent annual time with Utah Royal Kids of greater Salt Lake.

A religious organization, Utah Royal Kids exists to provide opportunities for children in the foster care system by creating positive, life-changing moments for innocent children who have been victims of neglect, abuse, and abandonment.
With support from ABC members, including Big-D Construction, children were presented with clothes, toys, fun activities, and food, including sweet treats from the Big-D ice cream truck. In return, our Big-D family members who volunteered their time, along with other ABC members, received gratitude, a fun-filled program the children prepared, and an opportunity to give back to the community.
“Participating in the Royal Kids event is truly a win-win for both the kids and ABC members. It is both humbling and gratifying to see the kids’ faces light up upon receiving ice cream and other gifts donated by supporters like Big-D, and I am grateful to be a part of a company that believes in giving back,” said Jim Allison, Big-D Salt Lake Vice President, and ABC Board Member.

Celebrating the completion of the Utah State Correctional Facility (USCF).

For the last six years Big-D, as part of a joint-venture with Kitchell Construction (BDK), served as the Program Manager consultant for the Utah State Prison Relocation project.
Tuesday, Governor Spencer Cox cut the ribbon for the new USCF along with other stakeholders, marking the project&#8217;s substantial completion.
“Today is truly a landmark day for the Department of Corrections and the state of Utah as we celebrate the largest construction project in Utah history,” Gov Cox said.
Comprised of 35 buildings and 1.35 million square feet of operational space, the facility sits on approximately 172 acres of land approximately five miles west of the airport. The total cost of the facility, including infrastructure, is approximately $1,050,000,000.
The USCF will be occupied by the end of this summer.

Juniper, the campus’ main building, is the first of what is proposed to be 13 buildings to be constructed on the new campus and marks the kick-off of the multi-year $46.2 million project.
The new campus is scheduled to be completed for the Fall 2023 semester.

Recently Big-D Construction and partners took part in a ceremonial wall-breaking for the historic Frank E. Moss Courthouse in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. 

The two-year project was awarded to Big-D&#8217;s Salt Lake group by the General Services Administration.
We are honored and excited to be a part of a renovation that is so meaningful to the community and help preserve this historic gem.
Dozens gathered for the celebration including GSA, HOK Design, Preservation Utah, members of the U.S Bankruptcy Court for the District of Utah, and Big-D Construction.
The project is slated to be complete in the Spring of 2024!

Beginning her career at Johnson Carlier in August of 2020, Shivers was hired as the Director of Business Strategy, a position she’s done exceptionally well in during difficult times. In her role as Vice President, Shivers is responsible for the preconstruction, business development, marketing, and administrative teams. Additionally, she will spend a majority of her time securing new business, accelerating growth and ensuring 100% client satisfaction.
“I’m excited to represent Johnson Carlier and the Big-D Family in a leadership role. The opportunity to help grow the organization into the next century and execute on our strategic plan is a challenge I am ready for,” said Shivers.

Big-D Companies Announces Two New Executive Roles

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — As Big-D Family of Companies continues to grow nationwide with 14 offices in eight states and over 1,500 associates, the company&#8217;s executive leadership is also expanding.
Big-D announces Michael Sant, former Senior Vice President, has been named Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) and Shaun Orr, former Vice President, has been named Chief Information Officer (CIO).
Since 2005, Sant has been a leader at Big-D Companies in many different roles. Sant&#8217;s resume includes Senior Estimator, Pre-Construction Director, Vice President, Senior Vice President, and most recently an executive on one of the largest ongoing projects in the United States, The Salt Lake City International Airport Redevelopment Program.
“We are pleased to watch his progression as a leader, and we are excited to have him take the reigns as CSO,” said Big-D Chief Executive Officer Cory Moore.
As Chief Strategy Officer, Sant will have many new responsibilities including consistently clarifying and communicating Big-D Companies&#8217; vision and taking the necessary strategic steps to support that vision and continued growth.

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH (January 3, 2022) – Big-D Companies, ranked among the nation’s largest builders, today announced Cory Moore has been named Chief Executive Officer. 
Previous CEO, Rob Moore, will remain an influential leader as the companies Executive Chairman.

WSU was founded in Ogden, Utah as Weber Stake Academy in 1889.

We&#8217;re committed to family literacy! Treehouse Children&#8217;s Museum has a community-focused initiative to help parents and grandparents prepare their children for the start of school. Recognizing that many children start Kindergarten in local schools without the skills they need to succeed, and that many children do not attend any preschool programs before the start of their formal schooling, we&#8217;ve worked with educators, schools, and community organizations, and with a renowned children&#8217;s book illustrator and author, to provide new resources to both parents and teachers.

While we certainly benefit from the time, energy, and talents of our volunteers, we want to make sure they receive an equal amount of reward. Big-D offices were awarded “2021 Best Project of the Year” by the Associated General Contractors of Utah!

Dovetail Construction, a Bozeman-based construction company, has announced a new strategic partnership with Big-D Signature and its parent company, Big-D Construction, one Of the nation&#8217;s largest construction companies. 
Dovetail Construction is owned by childhood friends Tim Rote and Kevin Sullivan, and together with their internal team Of skilled carpenters, subcontractors, and network Of architects and engineers, Dovetail has built numerous private residences and spearheaded several light commercial projects in and around southwest Montana. 
Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Big-D Construction has successfully completed hundreds Of construction projects across the country. The firm is currently working on its largest project to date — The New SLC Airport Redevelopment Program. 
The project is part Of a joint venture with Holder Construction. Big-D Signature, with Offices in Jackson Hole and Park City, 
specializes in building resorts and private estates.

While the partnership is new, Big-D and Dovetail&#8217;s connection began years ago, when Mike Kerby (now Senior Vice President Of Big-D Signature) and Dovetail&#8217;s Tim Rote worked together on a large construction project in Hawaii, developing a friendship that has lasted over the years. 
&#8220;While this is a great professional opportunity for us, I&#8217;m personally excited to be working with Mike again,&#8221; explains Rote. 
&#8220;Big-D Signature and Dovetail share a similar business philosophy that puts priority on mutual respect, clear communication, quality results — and an enjoyable process for everyone along the way.&#8221; 
Additionally, Dovetail and Big-D Signature will be working closely with JLF Architects, an award-winning architecture firm based in Bozeman with extensive experience in commercial and luxury home design in the West and across the country. Big-D Signature already enjoys a successful partnership with JLF&#8217;s Design Build entity, having built many Of the firm&#8217;s projects in Jackson Hole, Bozeman, and Park City, among other locations. 
&#8220;From our standpoint, we don&#8217;t see Dovetail straying all that far from the path we&#8217;re on,&#8221; says Sullivan. &#8220;We&#8217;re the same guys, same group, same approach to business — but now, that path has widened significantly, giving us all more opportunity for growth and shared success.&#8221; 
The design build team will begin working on several custom residential projects in the Bozeman area next year.

For the second year in a row, Big-D Construction is named a winner of the state of Utah’s Top Workplaces in 2021 by the Salt Lake Tribune.

ENR Regional Best Projects Awards banquet at the Salt Lake City Marriott downtown

Utah’s finest in the industry gathered for the ENR Regional Best Projects Awards banquet at the Salt Lake City Marriott downtown. Over 800 entries were submitted, awards were given to winners announced back in August. A BIG congratulations to all who won, including the Salt Lake City International Airport which was recognized as the Project of Year for the entire Intermountain Region as well as being honored as the Owner of the Year. We are also humbled to have been recognized as the Contractor of the Year for the Intermountain Region.
Big-D was pleased to accept multiple awards, including the Salt Lake City International Terminal Redevelopment as Best Transportation/Aviation project, as part of our combined work as Holder-Big-D, A Joint Venture (HDJV). Additional hardware was received for the following projects:

• Oatly – Merit Award, Manufacturing 
• Orem Family Fitness – Merit Award, Sports/Fitness

Salt Lake International Airport Topping Out Ceremony

500 skilled trade workers including, Holder-Big-D, A Joint Venture (HDJV), gathered for a “topping out” ceremony to celebrate a major milestone in the construction of Phase 2 of The New SLC.
During the ceremony, those involved in the project signed one of the final steel beams—weighing 3,500lbs.—before it was raised 55 feet to cap off Concourse A-east, which will house 22 Delta gates; 7 specialty retail, news, and gift locations; and 12 food and beverage options.
BIG congratulations to The New SLC and every single worker who has been part of this project.

USGBC Announces LEED Gold Certification Achieved
Salt Lake City, UT (Sept. 15, 2021) –Today, the Salt Lake City Department of Airports (SLCDA) celebrates one year since opening The New SLC-Phase 1—with the distinction of being the first new U.S. hub airport built in the 21st Century—while announcing LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The New SLC Airport was designed and built with a number of goals in mind: to build an airport that provides a flexible, right-sized design for the future that is more efficient, sustainable and maintains competitive costs. Additional goals were to build an airport that could withstand a major seismic event, provide more areas to plug in electronic devices and reflect the beauty of Utah—both inside and out. The New SLC has achieved its sustainability goal of LEED Gold certification for both the Terminal Redevelopment Program project and Concourse B-west.
“As two of the largest LEED v2009 gold certified airport terminal projects in the United States, the airport team faced the unique challenge of building on a large scale, while staying on-task and prioritizing health and sustainability,” said Lisa Stanley, director of technical services, USGBC. “I know just how dauting this task was and how much pre-planning was required to bring this project to where it is today, and congratulate all those involved.”
The airport achieved this certification through efforts involving emission reduction, waste minimization, water conservation and renewable energy implementation. Practicing sustainability began day 1 of construction. Prior to the airport opening, 95% of construction waste was diverted from landfills and incinerators. Before opening day, airlines began to transition from diesel to electric ground support equipment. And the layout of The New SLC plays a substantial role in sustainability with a linear concourse configuration that reduces the time aircraft idle and taxi. 
“The airport recognizes the importance of reducing carbon emissions to mitigate our impact on global climate change,” said Bill Wyatt, executive director, Salt Lake City Department of Airports. “The former airport—which was a beloved part of our community—was inefficient when it came to sustainability efforts. Everything from the boiler system to the plumbing and electrical systems were beyond repair. What is really impressive is that the new airport uses less water and less electricity than the former facility.”

2021 ENR Mountains States Contractor of the Year

On Aug. 11, 2021, Utah’s Commissioner of Apprenticeship Programs announced the launch of the state’s first comprehensive apprenticeship website &#8211; apprenticeship.utah.gov.
“As businesses struggle to hire enough workers, and as many Utahns are striving to earn a living wage, there is no better time to consider apprenticeships,” said Melisa Stark, commissioner of apprenticeship programs. “Employers can hire employees to start right away and learn on the job, and workers can get paid to train for a lucrative career.”
Apprenticeships are industry-driven, high-quality career pathways that are beneficial to both businesses and workers. Workers get paid on-the-job and related training, job security and portable credentials, certificates or degrees. Employers prepare their future workforce while reducing costs for recruitment, enjoying a 94% retention rate.
“Apprenticeships are an under-utilized pathway to a great, in-demand career,” said Rep. Mike Winder, who sponsored the legislation that created the new commissioner of apprenticeship role. “A four-year degree is not the only way.”
The announcement took place at the Post House project, a massive downtown construction site where apprentices work side by side with more experienced mentors to learn their trade.
“It’s no secret that the workforce is stretched, and finding qualified, skilled tradespeople has become ever increasingly challenging,” said Shaun Orr, vice-president of human resources at Big-D Construction. “Apprenticeship programs fill a critical role in attracting and retaining talent so we can continue to build the places where we live, work and play.”
While traditionally found in industries like construction, utilities and trades, apprenticeships are expanding to industries like healthcare and information technology. Utah has more than 4,200 apprentices and 265 registered apprenticeship programs in dozens of industries. Apprentices who complete their programs earn more over their career than non-apprentice participants, and upon completion earn an average of $60,000 annually. ​​​​​​​

State launches Apprenticeship Utah

Weber State University Topping Out Ceremony

Big-D Construction along with Weber State University, VCBO Architecture, and other trade partners, participated in the &#8220;Topping Out&#8221; ceremony of the new Noorda Engineering, Applied Science &amp; Technology building on Monday.
Painted purple and signed by several involved in the project, onlookers including future Big-D employees, watched as the final beam was hoisted into place. Affixed to the beam was an American flag on one end and an evergreen tree on the other; a tradition which dates back centuries and, depending on who you ask, is rumored to date back to Egypt and the construction of the pyramids. 
Situated on the north end of the campus, the Noorda Engineering Building will serve as the new home for the College of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology (EAST). Stay tuned&#8230;.construction is expected to be complete Fall 2022.
